A New Classic
Fleming Yachts celebrated its 25th Anniversary by introducing its newest flagship. The 78 retains Fleming’s low-profile pilothouse design as well as signature characteristics that have made its yachts admired throughout the world. Her semi-displacement hull delivers fuel-efficient speeds of 8 to 10 knots, yet she cruises in the high teens. Twin diesels reflect Fleming’s belief in redundancy. Beyond Fleming’s traditional qualities, the new 78, and specifically 78-02, is the most technologically advanced Fleming ever built. Fifteen-inch Touchscreens display and control Boening’s alarm system that monitors virtually every data point onboard. Other high-tech items include ABT’s TRAC-Star “Stabilization At Rest” system, an ultrasonic antifouling system, an onboard sewage treatment plant, heated windshields, a mast that lowers hydraulically, powered hatches, and a 13-camera CCTV system.
The 78’s master stateroom is amidships and takes advantage of the vessel’s full beam. Forward, a guest stateroom features a queen-sized island berth and en-suite head and shower. A second guestroom with a queen-sized berth and en suite head and shower is to port. The crew’s quarters, with a separate entrance from the aft deck, sleeps two and has room for a desk, small galley, and head with shower. The main saloon has a dedicated dining area adjacent to the gourmet-equipped galley. The pilothouse features twin Stidd helm chairs, generous chart workspace, and room for a commercial-like array of electronics. A dayhead, settee, dining table, and drop-down pilot berth allow the on-watch crew to tend to business. The dual-level flying bridge provides an upper helm area elevated for good forward sightlines. The lower bridge area has galley appliances, a dining table, and settee. Below on the main deck is another protected area with dining table and settee.
The hull is hand-laid solid fiberglass, reinforced using a matrix of frames and stringers. To resist water intrusion and prevent blistering, a vinylester resin is used below the waterline. The superstructure and decks are cored to reduce weight and lower the ship’s center of gravity. The full-length keel is protected by a stainless steel shoe, filled with a closed-cell foam core and sealed off from the hull. Fleming’s own, pressure-tested fiberglass fuel tanks feature vinylester and fire-retardant resins and are glassed into the hull structure. To minimize noise and vibration, AquaDrive’s system transfers shaft thrust to the ship’s stringers rather than the engine itself. Like all Flemings built for the U.S., the 78 is NMMA Certified and complies with the standards of the American Boat and Yacht Council (ABYC). All Flemings are also built to achieve the IMO CE Category “A-Ocean” rating, the most stringent rating for pleasure boats.
A bulbous bow is custom designed to optimize performance within the owner’s preferred range of cruising speeds. At 9.2 knots, 78-02 has a safe range of over 2,000 miles, and at 7.5 knots the range increases to 3,375 miles. A high cruising speed of 18 knots is achievable when desired. The full-length keel runs below the running gear for safety and directional stability. Thanks to special attention to noise and vibration reduction, the Fleming 78 is one of the quietest motoryachts on the market (see accompanying chart). Fleming offers a variety of engines and customized design options to best fit the needs of its individual owners.
