Grand Banks 38 Eastbay EX survey report

We spoke to Greg Michael of Pinnacle Marine Group in San Remo, New York, about the Grand Banks 38 Eastbay EX.

Here’s what he said:

• “A surveyor should check the teak decking in the cockpit and in the raised helm area. They screw the decking down onto fiberglass, right into the core. The problem is that once the teak decking starts to leak and split and the seams give way, you’re going to get moisture in the core, thus causing a separation of the laminate from the core. So you will have the expense of the teak deck replacement but more importantly what can end up being expensive fiberglass repairs.

• “The forward decks are cored, and in 1995 more than likely with divinycell closed cell foam. With the mid ’90s models it’s a good idea to pay attention to the forward decks, although they’re heavily built, we always like to percussion sound and check for any moisture intrusion, delamination, and sun-soaked or dry, cracked sealant.”

• “Most 38 Eastbays came with Caterpillar 3208s. If they’re well maintained, they’re good engines, and they have a long life, but they cannot be resleeved. In my opinion buyers need to realize that if they do invest in a rebuild or repower they essentially are getting a timeless yacht with the mechanical reliability of a newer vessel.”
