Tiara 4300 Sovran – Survey Report

We asked Malcolm Elliott of Florida Nautical Surveyors about the Tiara 4300 Sovran. Here’s what he had to say:

• “Anybody who’s going to look at one of those boats should know that the Volvo engines came with the seawater strainer after the seawater pump, and they were known to leak pretty badly. Make sure it’s been retrofitted, so a seawater strainer, such as a Groco, has been installed before the seawater pump. The seawater strainer came with a plastic casing and a plastic top. That was the problem on an early one: No one could understand where the water was coming from. So I was down in the engine room during the sea trial. All of a sudden this thing was like at 90-percent load and [with] all the heat in the engine room the cap expanded and water sprayed everywhere. The plastic would probably get a little bit softer with the heat and expand and leak water all over the engine mounts and the alternator on the port engine. Make sure that the seawater strainer is installed before the seawater pump or, if it’s not, then make sure the retrofit from Volvo has been installed, it’s a metal cap at the top of the strainer.”

• “The gelcoat is pretty good on those boats.”

• “Depending on the year, some of the boats had overhead hatches with very bad mastic, the sealant around the edges of the glass on the hatch. It looks like glue, and if you put your hand on it, it’s very soft.”

• “In the aft cabin, the shower sump is below the aft berth, and there are two panels screwed down, so a lot of people don’t bother going down into that area to check and make sure it’s all good. So maybe nine times out of ten, when I survey them, I find the shower sump is dirty, and nobody’s cleaned it out and it’s stopped working and then it all overflows into the bilge area, and there’s dirty water below the aft berth.”
